“Light Among Shadows: The Night of the Dead in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán”

In Mexican tradition, death does not signify an end, but rather a passage — a continuity that links generations through memory and celebration.

This photographic exhibition invites us to enter one of Mexico’s most deeply spiritual rituals: the Night of the Dead, as it is lived in the region of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán.

Through more than twenty images captured with sensitivity and respect, the exhibition reveals the ritual beauty of a night where candlelight guides the souls and the fragrance of marigolds traces invisible pathways between the living and the dead. Photographs taken in communities such as Janitzio, Tzintzuntzan, Ihuatzio, and Santa Fe de la Laguna document not only the visual richness of the tradition, but also the collective spirit of those who keep it alive.

“Light Among Shadows” does not seek a folkloric portrayal, but a profound and respectful approach to the Purépecha worldview. Each work stands as a silent testimony to faith, to family love, to an ancestral rite, and to cultural resistance in the face of modernity that threatens to dilute identities.

The exhibition also includes images of La Catrina, an iconic figure of Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Created by José Guadalupe Posada as La Calavera Garbancera as a social critique, she was later popularized by Diego Rivera in his mural Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central. With her elegant attire and wide-brimmed hat, La Catrina symbolizes the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of life, reminding us that death itself is also a cause for recognition and celebration.

More than an exhibition, “Light Among Shadows” is an invitation to cultural dialogue, to contemplation through images, and to the understanding of a tradition that transforms mourning into memory, and darkness into an offering of light.
